The Motability Scheme
Motability schemes enables people with disabilities to lease a new car using their government funded Motability allowance. In particular if you receive the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance, the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Supplement Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS) or the Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) you may be eligible to join the Motability Scheme.
There is no upper age limit to lease a vehicle on a Motability plan. As long as you are eligible for the allowance then owning a new car on a Motability plan is open to you. Parents and guardians are allowed to order a car on behalf of the child provided they are aged three years and above and also providing they receive HRMC DLA.
Do You Qualify For Motability?
To qualify to be able to lease a new car through a Motability plan you must have at least 12 months’ award length remaining as only the higher or enhanced rate of the mobility allowance is used.
From the 9th April 2014 the weekly allowance rates are:
- Higher Rate Mobility Component (HRMC) of Disability Living Allowance; Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment; Armed Forces Independence Payment: £56.75
- War Pensioners Mobility Supplement: £63.40
